To show evidence of my technical skills I have provided a PowerPoint slideshow that I made on Microsoft PowerPoint about Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. It was for my Western Art Music class in this previous semester. The slideshow includes pictures of Beethoven, A link to a video of the ninth being played by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and ten slides of information on his piece.
Slide 1: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony
Slide 2: Symphonies are pieces of music written in four movements played by an orchestra. These movements all have their specific qualities that make them each different from each other.
Traditionally the first movement of a Symphony is written in Sonata/Allegro form. Meaning that at the very beginning or “A-section” of the movement is played a few times, then it transitions into the “B-section” where the A-section is changed up a bit. Eventually, after the B-section is over, the A-section will be played again a few more times, then the first movement ends.
The second movement is generally softer and slower, showing off both the emotional and soft side of the composer, and the skill of the orchestra to play softly and beautifully.
Slide 3: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony also known as “The Chorale” is written in D minor. It was finished in 1824 by Ludwig van Beethoven and is still today considered one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. ¨The 9th Symphony was premiered on May 7th 1824 in the Karntnertor theater in Vienna, Italy.
The piece called for a full orchestra to play the entire symphony. The Karntnertor house orchestra plus the Vienna Music Society along with a select group of amateurs were chosen to play the premiere. While no complete list of premiere performers exists, many of Vienna's elite performers are known to have participated.
